Nick Nurse Foundation Announces Board of Directors Appointment

October 13, 2020

TORONTO – The Nick Nurse Foundation announced Tuesday the appointment of Julius Erving to its board of directors.

Commonly known as “Dr. J” or “Doctor”, Erving becomes the fourth appointment to the board at the Nick Nurse Foundation.  He is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of his time, and considered a main catalyst for the ABA-NBA merger in 1976.  In 1993, Erving was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Since retiring after the 1986-87 NBA season, Erving has continued to stay close to the game. He worked as a sports analyst for the NBC television network and as an executive for the Orlando Magic and has also pursued a number of other business opportunities.

“This is a significant moment for us as we continue to grow and broaden the reach of the foundation. We are so excited to have Dr. J on our leadership team. His dedication to the sport of basketball, coupled with his commitment to ensuring that the next generation is fully equipped and supported is inspiring. We are so happy to have him on board” said Nick Nurse.

As a board member, Erving will advise on key initiatives for the foundation including marquee events. Earlier this year, the Foundation launched with an intimate evening fundraiser with 120 guests. The evening included special performances from world-renowned artists including Daniel Caesar, Arkells and Jon Vinyl and raised over $100,000 to help support children and youth in the community.

Dr. J’s appointment to the board of directors follows the appointment of Arkells frontman, Max Kerman. Kerman's keen awareness of politics and social activism have inspired the lyrics to many of Arkells’ most popular songs, which have propelled them to being Canada’s most played Alt-Rock act.
